Work on the house continues, and I’m grateful for the patience of my neighbors as we enter week four or loud noises and strong smells. I make pots and pots of coffee, hoping that at least the room I’m allowed to work in (in this week’s case, the bedroom) smells nice.
I managed to finish the cover I had to do last week, working back at the studio at the end of afternoons and at night (and over the sunny weekend). I have another cover to work on, and I think I’ll have to repeat the “first shift taking care of the house painters, second shift at the studio working” for the next three days to finish this new assignment this week.
Meanwhile, on the drawing board next to me, Bá has been drawing some very familiar faces.
All the stories we’re working on are moving slowly at the same time. At a certain point, I used to think working on more than one project meant damaging the work flow of each one story when working on the other, but nowadays I try to see it differently. Stories don’t flow evenly, sometimes in need of more time to breath and flourish, after all we’re not machines, and in these slow gestating phases, it’s good to have something else to work on, and the inspiring energy you get when you finish something (be it a cover, an illustration, a comics page, a bigger sequence or an entire story) helps you get excited about the other projects you’re working on.
Last week, I talked to another cartoonist friend of mine and his long-gestating project has a similar schedule as ours, which makes me look forward to next year’s batch of new comics.
Be safe. Be kind. Be curious.
