I took a week off and drove down to the beach. I brought work with me, so I was just taking some time away from the city, I guess. I had to bring my notebooks, as I’m completely overrun by ideas and possibilities whenever I’m barefoot walking in the sand, or floating in the ocean as the sun sets. I wrote about new stories, I figured out how one story I’m working on should end, and I watched the waves breaking and imagined all the stories I could be doing if I focused on short stories instead of on big ones.
I exchanged some emails while I was away concerning being away. Concerning going somewhere. After more the two pandemic years, I finally started to open myself to the possibility of traveling to conventions, and the first step in that direction has been taken:
At the end of July, I’ll be at the GalaxyCon in Raleigh. I’ll be there all days, and I will have missed talking to other artists and to the fans as much as people might have missed me (I probably miss people a whole lot more).
Baby steps, right? One convention this year, to test the waters. To go inside an airplane and fly for more than 12 hours. Will people still be wearing masks at the end of July? Will they resent me if they’re not, but I am?
Next week, I’ll have more information about possibly opening a pre-convention commission list. I still have to go over some details with the nice folks at Cadence Art who will take care of this for me (just to make sure I focus all my time on creating beautiful art for you beautiful people). Having Paolo and the Cadence people take care of my appearance makes sure I’ll be spending most of the convention siting next to many artist friends I don’t see often enough: Gustavo Duarte, Rafael Albuquerque, Tula Lotay, Becky Cloonan, among many others. If you’re going to be away from home, be among friends.
I just drove back from the beach, but I still have a page to ink now, so this will be it for this week.
Be safe. Be kind. Be curious.
