Over the weekend, the Umbrella/Netflix marketing machine released the title of all six episodes of the last season of the Umbrella Academy show. Also over the weekend, late Sunday night as I was getting ready to go to bed, I think I figured out the title of one of my next books.
Titles are strange, as they don’t always come first. Many of our stories had different titles when we started writing them and eventually found their final title as more pages were written and drawn. One story, for example, changed titles when we wrote the last page. Some of our stories did have the title before everything else, and the title was the starting point, the inspirational creative thread that guided that story forward. I believe titles must make the audience curious, but shouldn’t give away too much.
Changing gears
At the beginning of the year, I thought I wouldn’t travel abroad to any convention and, as a result, wouldn’t open any new commission list. The goal was (and still is) to focus on the story (stories) on my drawing board, and so far the plan is working and I’m pleased with the direction my creative output is heading. Still, life is fluid and I’ve learned to adapt to changes as they present themselves, and it seems I might travel this year after all. If all goes well, I will open a pre-show commission list very soon, and I believe the commission I’m currently working on (for the winner of my Heroes for Brazil auctioned piece) will be a nice warm up for where I think I want to steer my commissions, visually. I’ll share in here the process of the new commission, and the info about the convention and the commission list as soon as these things solidify.
Cooking
The week started. A book arrived in the mail and I’m looking forward to diving into it (as soon as I manage to finish the book I’m currently reading). I went to an incredibly inspiring rock show on Saturday, followed by a late night get together with dear friends. Food for the soul, much needed whenever possible.
I have a meeting with my editor this week, to update him (and for him to update us) on what new is cooking.
Also, I have to cook lunch, and get some food ready for any other meal I can fit into my week.
Be safe. Be kind. Be curious.
