A lot of my Moleskine drawings are crooked and the proportions are weird, but in these cases I don’t mind it as much. I’m just drawing, putting some images on paper, filtering my thoughts (or just doing automatic drawings while my thoughts concentrate on something completely different). Still, as much as I like this part of my process, I realize that if this is all I put on the internet, all who follow me online will eventually think that’s what my work is. The danger of putting too much of this stuff online is that it becomes what you’re known for, what comes up when people search for you. Nowadays, a lot of artists are discovered online, and people admire their drawing skills and coloring skills, but the storytelling skills I’m looking for on an artist, the effort to push the comics’ language forward, often isn’t there.
Matt
It was Matt Fraction’s birthday on December 1st. I was wearing a t-shirt he made the first year Casanova came out, in 2006.
Any of you out there is watching the Monark- Legacy of Monsters Apple Plus tv series he co-created? Here’s an long interview with him talking about the genesis of the show.
Saudade
Vários desenhos e ideias no meu caderno tem textos escritos em português. No atual processo de criar histórias longas primordialmente para o mercado americano, escrevendo em inglês, é no caderno que eu mato a saudade de compor em português.
Two roads going forward
I’m going to start writing my newsletters in two versions, one in English, one in Portuguese. The English version will continue to come out on Mondays. I’ll probably do the Portuguese one on Fridays (or Sundays). They won’t be talking about the same things, but some times a subject might be on both. When I published a weekly comic strip on a Brazilian newspaper, I had a vehicle to share ideas and worries with the Brazilian audience, and I miss this interaction, I miss the doing something that would be published that same week, and would be discussed almost immediately. I can’t comment on something that happens today on a story I’ll only finish in five years, so most of my stories aren’t about the now, they are about the forever. This newsletters help me keep reflecting about the now, and some times what I want to talk about now will only make sense if I talk about it in Portuguese with my local audience.
Mainly, I’ll be doing a local edition of the newsletter so that my mom can read it.
Resumindo…
Vou começar a escrever uma versão desses textos em português pro público brasileiro, pra discutir tudo aquilo do meu (do nosso) cotidiano que só faz sentido para quem é daqui.
Be safe. Be kind. Be curious.

Como fã brasileiro, gosto da ideia de ter algo exclusivo pra gente. O papo é diferente mesmo, não tem jeito!
Adoro o conceito da troca de idioma no meio do texto, é muito brasileiro bilíngue energy.
