Fastball special.
With a twist.
It’s not always easy to understand how important it is to know what to leave out of a drawing. Artists often think that drawing more elements, more characters, an incredibly detailed background, all of that makes the image more impressive. As I started sketching this new Umbrella Academy image, I was planning the composition with all the other members of the team, but only when I focused on Spaceboy ready to throw Five (as a nod to the classic Colossus/Wolverine move) I realized it would work better only with them.
This week, Bá and I will be at our last convention of the year, CCXP, which happens here in São Paulo. The comic book guests have big tables in the Artists Alley (called Artists Valley around here), with big banners behind it, and this year I made a brand new drawing to decorate our banner.
After I finished the drawing, I noticed how its colors are very much the color of the Brazilian flag, and I worried, two months ago when I did the image, that it would make us look as sympathizers of the horrible current Brazilian president (specially if he had won the election, which luckily he lost), but right now, a month away from the change in office and the rebirth of hope, it’s time to reclaim the Brazilian colors from the fascists. The World Cup is on, and it’s giving the country reasons to use its colors without fear.
Our country, or our medium, or our world. We are always better when we think we are the many, the plural, the inclusive.
Be safe. Be kind. Be curious.
