Even when the sun came out, it was a cold weekend, and I only properly entered in the water once, for a few minutes, but it was well worth it going to the beach for the last few days and enjoy this differently paced life a little bit more before my next birthday in a little less than two weeks. I like my maritime rituals as I somehow try to mark the passing of time with something other than cake.
This is going to be a short letter. I spent more time than I should (but less than I wanted) reading some comics that came out last year, trying to catch up on what was new, what people I know were talking about, in order to vote for the Eisner Awards. I wish I didn’t have to do so much condensed reading in a little less than a week, but this is my reality: I work a lot a I spend most of my time diving into my own stories instead of in other creator’s tales, and when it comes to making my choices, I can only choose a handful of categories. This time, with a little more effort and last minute reading, I was able to vote on two thirds of the categories, so I don’t feel so bad.
Another kind of choosing is going on in the studio with a fast approaching deadline as well, and I have been looking at a lot of original art from our archives. Pages, covers, then studies, sketches, notebooks, thumbnails. We have only another week to look over almost three decades of our professional lives and choose what we believe better represents us.
No pressure.
Be safe, be kind, be curious.
Pa-ZOW!
