I’m on the road. Been away from home for more than a week, which I don’t usually do, and am about to do the second of two conventions back to back, which I haven’t done since I went to Napoli and then went straight to TCAF in Toronto.
I had a great time in Richmond. I drew for a bunch of people (including just for fun, to myself), saw the Edgar Allan Poe museum, and ate well. The weather and the people were warmer than I was expecting, but I knew I wouldn’t regret bringing all the winter coats and scarves and gloves and hats, because in Chicago it stills feel like winter (to me, the tropical Brazilian wandering this northern parts).
I helped Jill Thompson set up her booth in Artists’ Alley today, already bumped into TerryMoore and Skottie Young. Jeff Smith just landed and is looking for directions to the restaurant. There’s a Challengers party on Friday, and Jill is officially joining me for the panel on Saturday.
One more time, here’s the description of the panel:
You can make comics anywhere you want, anyway you want. You don't have to leave your house to connect with your audience, with your peers, with the World. But what if you do leave? What will you learn? What will you discover? Who will you meet?Comics can take you around the World to meet the readers of each country and other creators from all over the Globe, and Fabio Moon (Daytripper, Casanova) has spread his love for comics at conventions and festival from all over: from Argentina to Mexico to India to Algeria to Denmark to Germany to France to Italy to the UK to Canada to the US all the way back to his native Brazil. Along his many travels, he met many other artists, like fellow globetrotter artist Jill Thompson, and they became friends, and that's now Fabio ended up in Chicago. They will share some stories about following your dreams wherever they take you and how they have inspired real and imaginary stories.
Umbrella?
Here’s a link to a podcast about Umbrella Academy. I meant to listen to it before posting, but time got away from me.
Getting the band back together
That’s what it feels like being on the road and seeing so many of the friends I haven’t seen since before the pandemic. You’ll notice my panel is about that special bond you create with those you decide to let in when you decide to get out.
We should get out more.
We should let people in more.
I was in New York in 1999 on a summer movie class at NYU, and a friend of mine on a literature summer class at Columbia introduced me to Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. She would read me passages she liked, and we would talk for hours about the potential of human connection, if only we were open to give and to receive it.
I adapted one short poem from that book into a one page story a few years ago.
If you see me around, don’t be a stranger.
Be safe. Be kind. Be curious.
Pa-ZOW!

The first time I heard about the book "Leaves of grass" was in the 1994 movie "With honors". I don't remember much of the movie itself, but essentially a bunch of college kids learn something about empathy by sheltering a homeless man for a while, and this book was the man's favorite. You made me remeber all that, so now I'm thinking about checking the book.
Your positive attitude and intentions are heartwarming!
