Art in the City
when the artist is out in the wild, don't miss your chance!
I went to the beach to recharge over the weekend. I didn’t mind the cold weather, the eventual rain, the unreliable tides. I read a little more of the LOCAS collection, I played volleyball in the sand with my niece and I sang more karaoke songs in two days than I have probably ever sung before.
I have pages to draw, a cover to finish, and deadlines to hit. I needed this moment to pause and take a big breath before I dive deep into work.
My brother is going to New York this week in time to attend the vernissage of the “Musical Bodies” exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for which he loaned some pieces of artwork the curators wanted to include. In partnership with a cultural program called Brasil em Quadrinhos developed by a Brazilian convention with the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations, Bá organized a small series of events during his stay in Manhattan.
Thursday from 5PM to 7PM, Bá will make his first stop at the Forbidden Planet comic book store (832 Broadway, close to Union Square) for a signing. The latest issue of Umbrella Academy - Plan B (issue 4) just came out and it’s the perfect opportunity to have it signed. There’s a new edition of the ABSOLUTE DAYTRIPPER which came out in March or April, and this is also the first chance to have that beautiful book signed.
On Friday, it’s time for some friendly chat about comics. The Philippe Labaune Gallery, which has been the stage of some breathtaking comic book original art exhibits, will host a conversation between Bá and Mike Mignola from 5PM to 7PM. Bá did the image that illustrates this letter specially to advertise the conversation.
“Don’t you remember how HARD it is to draw Hellboy?”, he told me when I asked why he didn’t draw probably the most visually appealing characters, Hellboy and Spaceboy.
Hargreeves and professor Broom it is, then.

The vernissage at the MET is next Monday, and then, on Tuesday, Bá organized an evening at the Brazilian consulate (225 East 41st Street, between 2nd and 3rd Ave) at 6PM, with a presentation about his work followed by a chat about his work with our friend Will Dennis, former Vertigo editor and now a freelancer editor who, among a million other books, is spearheading most of DSTLRY’s publishing ventures. Some of the presentation will be made in Portuguese, but the chat with Will will be in English.

Bá doesn’t go to a lot of events these days. Most of his time is spent with his family, and the rest is at the drawing board, where he’s dividing his time between Umbrella Academy pages and the new story with me. Still, he enjoys the opportunities to share his love for comics and to talk about how he got to where he is, what he learned on the way and what he still wants to accomplish. He’s a very inspirational speaker, and we could all use someone who reminds us that following our dreams might be hard, might take a long time, but it’s always worth it.
Be safe, be kind, be curious.
Pa-ZOW!
